The problem is my registry doesn't have a (WindowsUpdate\AU) How can I fix that. Other benefits of registering an account are subscribing to topics and forums, creating a blog, and having no ads shown anywhere on the site. Awesome bro, thanks!! Resolved - although the 'checking for updates' stage is very, very slow. Arun's little trick has very noticeably speeded up my Windows Explorer opening and other tasks on my computer. On both computers, this fixed the problem.
