I have run all Microsoft FixIts I could find including http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 and also performed all manual repair steps on that page. So, things got to the point where the Auto Update was updating 1 update at a time. When I go to remove the update Windows has fit & shows me list of almost everything installed on the system & says if I remove this update, The world will I rebooted.

Then, rebooted & activated Windows. Matter of interest - which one is it? I'd hate to mess things up now, after ALL of this work. I'll report back with the results.
