Windows Vista Stuck On Checking For Updates

Tried MS's FixIt, WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, etc. It will remind me to dig deeper. However when I changed settings from notify but let me download and install to automatic install - Windows update worked. Each step evidently may take a very long time.
