Not all the time, but often enough that I got burned twice. Good news: Microsoft offers free technical support for Windows Update and that support provided a solution to my problem. I don't use Automatic Updates, but if you do, and find the yellow shield never goes away, you may be experiencing this problem. Start the two services That's the good news.The bad news is that this only works for one go-round with Windows Update. I stopped the Update Process, then changed the name of that folder & restarted the process. Nothing was working. This morning I looked & my system "LOOKED" like it was locked up.

NO BITS. ANY help is appreciated. I tried norwegian 's idea but there was nothing in the C:\Windows\Software Distribution folder.

Once you reboot and go to Windows Updates it will ask you to install the ActiveX control. Support for SP3 and IE7 is offered on the phone (866-234-6020), although, I had a hard time qualifying.
