So I dug around some and found that the error lies not with the video files but with the audio over HDMI. Thus, you can play DVD content even without Windows Media Center. Setting both the windows audio in the Sound control panel and setting WMC to 5.1 will give you the decoder error screen if you are using HDMI audio to the TV. The sad thing is that it needed to be written at all. More Help

Then the error will go away. Hoping but not holding my breath for a future Windows update to fix what has been broken. I tried slightly older versions of the ATI driver (v8.6), but the problem is still present as soon as ATI drivers are installed over the Microsoft ATI drivers that come with Re-run audio setup in WMC.

Then last Saturday, (Oct. 11th) I got the decoder error message and the sound would not play through my surround sound speakers. Do you know if this is something that MS is working to correct or is there something on my system messing things up? I uninstalled the previous version of ffdshow on my machine (v1.0) and reinstalled the latest version (1.3.4531, tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions). While vista includes a dvd decoder (which earlier versions did not) A seperate 3d party decoder will still be needed to play Divx, vob or other "less standard" video files. What do you want me to do to verify changing decoder for live TV works and does not break anything?? So, yes, any codec tool can potentially wreak havoc with WMC.
